Project Overview and Initial Steps
GAF Timberline Solar Introduction
hey it's Nick again with American home contractors today we're taking a look at a one-day installation of a GF Timberline solar roofing system featuring the world's first nailable solar shingles even though we're dealing with solar technology today's project will look almost identical to a traditional roof replacement
Roof Preparation and Underlayment
to start our crews strip the existing shingles and weather proofing to inspect the base wood for any structural damage once we replace the trouble spots it's time for underlayment for for our Timberline solar projects we like to use GAF deck armor as the main underlayment material along with leak barriers like GAF weather watch the underlayment lays under the shingle providing a second layer of protection against the rain
Solar Shingle Installation Process
once the roof is prepped and ready to go it's time to install the solar system we're joining our crew on the third row of solar shingles notice how each shingle snaps into line with its neighbor once it's in place a crew member then uses a gauge to ensure the shingle is perfectly level before his partner Nails it to the roof believe it or not that nail gun is the only power tool needed for this install these two will repeat this process over 100 times before this roof is finished and this part should only take them around an hour and a half to complete
Timberline Solar System Details and Integration
Solar Shingle Features and Durability
unlike other systems Timberline solar is made up of shingles not panels or heavy tiles these shingles are Waters shedding strong and warranted to withstand winds up to 130 mph
System Cabling and Output Verification
here you see the detached panel cabling once all of the shingles are in place the team will connect the entire array much like a string of holiday lights and before the sunlight Fades our foreman Jorge will connect each row making sure every shingle is providing the proper output
Seamless Integration with GAF HDZ Shingles
while this crew finishes the solar installation another is hard at work installing asphalt shingles on the remainder of the roof however we aren't just putting any normal shingle on this home this is the GF Timberline solar hdz asphalt shingle and at first glance this may seem just like any other shingle however in order for them to seamlessly integrate with the Timberline solar system GAF had to increase the industry standard 5 and 5/8 in exposure to a whopping 7.5 in a 30% increase that ensures an incredibly precise transition
Finalizing Installation and Contractor Information
Electrical Connection and Energy Collection
after the new roof was completed the crew wrapped up the trim work and gutters once the roof is wired into the home's existing electrical Network that's it this family is ready to go and they're ready to begin collecting renewable solar energy
